Lonar Lake

Lonar Lake is a remarkable saline soda lake located on the Deccan Plateau in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, India. What makes it extraordinary within the Indian landscape is that the basin was not formed by volcanic activity or tectonic subsidence, but by a hypervelocity meteorite impact, making it the only impact crater lake in the country and one of only a handful known worldwide that formed in basaltic rock. The crater sits deep within a circular depression whose near-symmetric walls rise sharply above the water, isolating the basin from outside drainage. Inside this enclosed environment, evaporation has allowed salts and alkalis to accumulate over hundreds of thousands of years, producing distinct chemical zones within the same body of water. The result is an unusual lake ecosystem that supports highly adapted microbial communities and a surprising array of birdlife along its wooded shores. Lonar Lake gains added significance from the cultural and religious heritage scattered around its rim. Ancient Indian texts allude to the site, and several surviving temples, most famously the Daitya Sudan Temple, reflect centuries of regional history. The lake's geological uniqueness, ecological character, and cultural setting together give it a strong identity as both a natural landmark and a protected heritage site.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
