Ovčar-Kablar Gorge

Ovčar-Kablar Gorge is a dramatic river gorge in western central Serbia, carved by the West Morava river between the steep slopes of Mount Ovčar to the south and Mount Kablar to the north. The gorge extends approximately 15 to 20 kilometers through the composite valley of the West Morava, situated roughly midway between the towns of Čačak and Požega, about 155 kilometers southwest of Belgrade. The landscape is characterized by towering limestone cliffs, deeply incised meanders, and a distinctive microclimate influenced by the surrounding mountain masses. What makes this gorge exceptionally notable is its extraordinary concentration of medieval and early modern religious architecture, with over thirty monasteries, churches, and sacred sites constructed along its banks since the 14th century, earning it the nickname the "Serbian Mount Athos." The area was designated a natural monument and protected as a landscape of outstanding features in 2001, covering approximately 25 square kilometers of ecologically and geologically significant terrain.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
