Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary

Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in western Bhutan, spanning 268.93 square kilometers across Sarpang District and southeastern Dagana District. Located along the border with the Indian state of West Bengal, the sanctuary occupies a strategic position in Bhutan's network of protected areas, connecting to both Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park and Royal Manas National Park through a designated biological corridor that crosses a national highway. The sanctuary's elevation ranges from 200 meters in the lower reaches to 1,600 meters in the higher terrain, creating diverse ecological zones within a relatively compact area. Unlike many of Bhutan's protected areas, Phibsoo has no human residents, allowing ecosystems to function with minimal human interference. The sanctuary is geographically separated from the Indian border by two significant rivers: the Sunkosh River to the west and the Sanathang River to the east. This natural boundary, combined with Bhutan's strong conservation policies, has enabled the sanctuary to serve as a refuge for species that have been displaced from other regions due to human activity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
