Agioi Theodoroi

Agioi Theodoroi is a small pair of uninhabited islets lying just off the northwestern coast of Crete, near the resort of Agia Marina and administratively part of the Chania regional unit. The larger islet is called Agios Theodoros, popularly known as Thodorou, while a tiny companion a few metres to the north is called Mikros Agios Theodoros. Together they form one of the most important small-island wildlife refuges in Greece, set aside primarily to protect a pure breeding population of the Cretan wild goat, the kri-kri, and to support a notable colony of Eleonora's falcons. Although the islands are tiny and uninhabited, they carry a layered human history that stretches back to antiquity, when they were known as Coete or Akytos and noted in the Stadiasmus Maris Magni for their potable water. In the late sixteenth century the Venetians built two small fortifications on Agios Theodoros to guard the Cretan coast, and one of those strongholds was dramatically destroyed in 1645 when its garrison blew up the powder magazine rather than surrender to Ottoman forces. Today the islets are a strictly protected nature reserve, integrated into the European Natura 2000 network, and closed to visitors for most of the year. Their significance lies less in their dramatic scenery than in their role as a small, quiet sanctuary for endemic Cretan fauna and breeding seabirds, making Agioi Theodoroi a high-value conservation site in the Mediterranean.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
