Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park

Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park is a marine protected area surrounding the island of Cozumel in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Located approximately 20 kilometers off the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea, the park encompasses a significant portion of the island's southern and western reef systems. The park is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest coral reef complex in the world, and protects both shallow coral gardens and mesophotic reef environments extending to a depth of 100 meters. Established on July 19, 1996, the park was designated under President Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León and later recognized as a Ramsar Wetland in 2005, forming part of the Isla Cozumel Biosphere Reserve. The reef ecosystem supports more than 1,000 marine species, including several endangered species and endemic fish found nowhere else on Earth.
