Barren Isles

The Barren Isles are a small archipelago stretching roughly 40 kilometres off the west coast of Madagascar, within the Melaky region. The chain comprises nine main isles and sand banks, set in the Mozambique Channel where Madagascar's western marine environment transitions between coastal mangroves, shallow lagoon systems, and deeper offshore waters. Traditionally, local customs forbade permanent residence on the isles, allowing only temporary shelter for fishermen. Since 2004, the archipelago has increasingly become a seasonal home for Vezo fishermen migrating from the south, particularly from around Toliara, who now spend much of the year living in makeshift palm-and-tarpaulin settlements on the islands. The archipelago's environmental significance was formally recognized in 2017, when it was designated as a Ramsar Wetland, placing it within an international framework for the conservation of wetlands and associated marine habitats.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
