Beachy Head West

Beachy Head West is a Marine Conservation Zone in the English Channel, lying just offshore from the East Sussex coast in southeast England. It consists of two spatially separate areas that together stretch from Brighton Marina on the edge of Brighton and Hove to Beachy Head near Eastbourne, with a gap at the mouth of the River Ouse near Newhaven. The zone covers roughly 24 square kilometres of seabed and coastal waters designated for their marine ecological value. The protected area overlaps with several wider conservation designations on land, including the Heritage Coast within the South Downs National Park, the eastern half of the UNESCO Brighton and Lewes Downs Biosphere Reserve, and part of the Seven Sisters Voluntary Marine Conservation Area. This layering of designations reflects the strong natural character of the chalk-dominated Sussex coastline and its adjoining marine environment. Beachy Head West is especially valued for its underwater chalk habitats, including chalk reefs and gullies that support specialised communities of marine life. These habitats are considered among the best examples of their type in southeast England, giving the zone a clear identity within the regional network of marine protected areas.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
