Kazakhstan's first state nature reserve created to protect the Ural population of the saiga antelope.

Bokeyorda Nature Reserve

Bokeyorda Nature Reserve is a large state nature reserve in the West Kazakhstan region of Kazakhstan, spanning parts of four administrative districts: Bokeyordinsky, Zhanibeksky, Kaztalovsky, and Zhangalinsky. Established in 2022, it is notable as the first specially protected natural area in West Kazakhstan to operate as an independent legal entity, marking a shift toward more formal institutional management of conservation land in the region. The reserve covers a vast expanse of dry steppe and semi-desert terrain characteristic of the northwestern Kazakh lowlands, an environment that supports one of the most important remaining strongholds of the saiga antelope. Its primary conservation mission is to safeguard the Ural population of saiga, a once-numerous migratory ungulate whose range has declined dramatically across the Central Asian steppes. Alongside the reserve itself, an adjacent protected area known as the Ashchiozek Sanctuary was organized at the same time to extend ecological coverage around the core reserve. Together, these two units form a connected landscape designed to give the local saiga population a wider and more resilient territory in which to survive seasonal migrations and breeding cycles.

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
