Kazakhstan's largest protected pine-belt forest along the Irtysh River

Yertis Ormany State Forest Natural Reserve

Yertis Ormany is a large state forest natural reserve in northeastern Kazakhstan, stretching across the Shcherbakty and Lebyazhye districts of Pavlodar Oblast. The reserve protects a section of the famous Irtysh pine belts, which are narrow strips of pine forest that grow on sandy soils amid the surrounding dry steppe. Created in 2003 to consolidate forest management and ensure long-term conservation of these ecologically, scientifically, and culturally valuable pine woodlands, the reserve covers roughly 278,000 hectares. The landscape is a striking contrast between sandy-soil pine forests and open steppe, set within the southwestern part of the Kulunda Plain. There are no permanent rivers or springs within the reserve, and freshwater is limited to a handful of small, often saline lakes and artificial reservoirs used for fire control and wildlife watering. Climate is sharply continental, with hot dry summers, harsh winters, and wide temperature swings that shape the character of the vegetation. Ecologically, Yertis Ormany is significant as one of the few forested refuges for wildlife in a predominantly steppe region of Kazakhstan. The reserve also provides an important buffer against desertification in this dry corner of the country. Beyond its ecological value, the pine belts have long been a distinctive feature of the Irtysh region, with recognized scientific, cultural, and recreational importance.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
