Hato El Frío

Hato El Frío is a vast historic estate and natural reserve in the plains of Los Llanos, in Apure State, Venezuela. Located in the Muñoz Municipality, it spans roughly 60,000 hectares of seasonally flooded savanna, wetland, and gallery forest that together form one of the most important wildlife landscapes in northern South America. The property has been a working cattle ranch since the early nineteenth century, and that continuous traditional land use is credited with keeping its ecosystems largely intact through more than two hundred years. Because it preserves extensive wetlands in a region where habitat loss has been severe, Hato El Frío has become internationally recognized as a refuge for species such as the Orinoco caiman, the capybara, and the green anaconda. Beyond its ecological role, it carries a strong cultural and historical identity, having once belonged to General José Antonio Páez and memory of Bolívar-era Venezuela. Its mix of historical heritage, working ranch culture, and exceptional biodiversity makes it one of the defining natural spaces of the Venezuelan llanos.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
