Hen and Chicken Islands

The Hen and Chicken Islands are a small, uninhabited archipelago lying east of the Northland Peninsula off the northern coast of New Zealand. The group consists of one large island, Hen Island (known in Maori as Taranga), and a chain of smaller islands collectively called the Chickens or Marotiri, arranged to the north and east of the main landmass. Together the islands cover a modest total area and rise from older volcanic terrain that once connected to the mainland before post-glacial sea level rise separated them. The archipelago is best known for its exceptional wildlife values. The islands host breeding seabird colonies and populations of forest birds that have vanished from much of the New Zealand mainland because of introduced predators. Recognized by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area, the Hen and Chickens play an important role in the conservation of New Zealand's native birdlife and reptile fauna, including tuatara, geckos, and skinks. The islands also carry a layered human history. They were originally held by the Maori iwi Ngā Puhi, were given their European name by Captain James Cook in 1769, and eventually passed into public ownership in the late nineteenth century. Designated as a scenic reserve in the early twentieth century and later declared a wildlife refuge, the chain today serves as a protected natural sanctuary separated from the mainland by approximately 12 kilometres of open water.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
