World's largest lizard sanctuary and marine biodiversity hotspot in the Lesser Sunda Islands

Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park is a protected area spanning the volcanic islands of the Lesser Sunda Islands in eastern Indonesia, straddling the border between East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara provinces. The park encompasses the three major islands of Komodo, Padar, and Rinca, along with 26 smaller islands and surrounding marine waters, covering a total area of 1,733 square kilometers with 603 square kilometers of land. Established in 1980 primarily to protect the Komodo dragon, the world's largest living lizard, the park has since expanded its conservation mandate to encompass both terrestrial and marine biodiversity. The islands feature a rugged terrain of rounded volcanic hills rising to 735 meters, characterized by an exceptionally dry climate that supports distinctive savannah vegetation. In 1991, the park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and designated a Man and the Biosphere Reserve, recognizing its outstanding universal value as one of the world's most significant biodiversity hotspots.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
