Mangerivola Special Reserve

The Mangerivola Special Reserve is a protected natural area situated in eastern Madagascar, within the Atsinanana region and the district of Brickaville. It lies in an isolated part of the country, roughly 380 kilometers from Antananarivo and 128 kilometers from Toamasina, with no road access directly to the reserve itself. The reserve is embedded in the broader protected landscapes of eastern Madagascar and is administratively part of the Zahamena Strict Nature Reserve network, contributing to one of the island's most biologically significant rainforest corridors. Ecologically, the reserve protects lowland and mid-altitude humid dense forest, together with rupicolous vegetation communities clinging to rocky outcrops. Its fauna is its strongest identity marker: the reserve supports around one hundred bird species, including the rare Soumagne's owl and the Madagascar serpent eagle, alongside nineteen reptile species and a notable assemblage of seven lemur species. Because it combines difficult access with high species richness, it is best understood as a quiet, scientific-grade sanctuary rather than a high-volume tourist destination. Mangerivola was established in 1958 under Madagascar's foundational protected-area decree and has been managed within the national protected-area system that today falls under Madagascar National Parks. Its designation as a Special Reserve reflects both its ecological importance and the need for tight control of human activity to safeguard its vulnerable wildlife.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
