Markakol Nature Reserve

The Markakol Nature Reserve lies in the Eastern Kazakhstan region, deeply within the Southern Altai mountains. It surrounds the high-altitude Lake Markakol, a tectonic mountain basin set between the Kurchum and Azutau ranges, and protects one of the cleanest and most biologically distinct freshwater systems in Kazakhstan. The reserve was established to safeguard a landscape where taiga forests, alpine meadows, mountain tundra, and glacial lake waters meet within a relatively compact area. Its forests of Siberian fir, spruce, and Siberian pine give way to subalpine and alpine vegetation belts that climb more than 3,000 meters above sea level. Markakol is particularly important for its native fish fauna, rare plants, and the rich birdlife associated with both lake and forest habitats. The combination of southern steppe influences and northern Siberian taiga gives the area an unusually broad biological character, making it a key protected site for understanding the natural heritage of the Kazakh Altai.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
