Monumento Natural Formaciones de Tepuyes

Monumento Natural Formaciones de Tepuyes is a protected natural area in southern Venezuela, designated in 1991 to safeguard a collection of extraordinary flat-topped mountains known as tepuys. The monument spans forested terrain across the states of Amazonas and Bolívar, covering roughly one million hectares in the heart of the Guayana Shield region. The defining features of the monument are the tepuy formations themselves: ancient sandstone and quartzite plateaus with vertical cliffs rising abruptly from the surrounding jungle. Because these mesas are extremely old geologically and largely isolated from one another, they have developed distinctive summit ecosystems with many endemic plant and animal species. Together, the protected tepuys represent one of South America's most singular combinations of geology, scenery, and biological isolation, protecting both the dramatic landscape and the fragile highland habitats that have evolved across them over hundreds of millions of years.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
