Nizhegorodskoe Povolzhie National Park

Nizhegorodskoe Povolzhie is one of the newest national parks of federal significance in European Russia, located in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. Established in 2024, the park is designed to protect large, ecologically diverse landscapes along the middle Volga and the forested, bog-rich territory beyond it. Rather than forming a single unbroken reserve, the park consists of five distinct clusters spread across nine administrative districts, allowing it to safeguard different ecosystems that would not fit within one contiguous boundary. The protected territory is notable for the variety of natural environments it brings together. These include some of the largest remaining old-growth southern taiga forests in Europe, extensive peat bog systems of international importance, fragments of steppe and meadow-steppe on sandy Volga terraces, and small isolated karst forest patches with limestone sinkholes and caves. Because each cluster represents a different ecological setting, the park functions as a regional ecological network rather than a single habitat type. The park holds substantial biodiversity value. It hosts rare boreal plant communities, orchid-rich understory vegetation, internationally important wetlands for birds, and a long list of animal species listed in regional and federal Red Books, including large raptors, bats, and rare mammals. Although it is newly established, its significance lies in formally consolidating and protecting diverse natural complexes that had previously been only partially protected as wildlife sanctuaries or natural monuments.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
