Phou Den Din National Protected Area

Phou Den Din National Protected Area is a large conservation landscape in northern Laos, set within the rugged hill country of Phongsaly Province near the Vietnamese border. Established as a National Biodiversity Conservation Area in 1993, it covers a substantial area of forested mountains and valleys whose elevations climb well above two thousand meters. The reserve is valued primarily for the intact forest cover it preserves, the wildlife populations it shelters, and its role in maintaining ecological connectivity across the Laos-Vietnam borderlands. The terrain is steep and hilly, shaped by tributary river systems that drain eastward into Vietnam, and much of the landscape remains densely forested. Wildlife is a defining feature of the area, with populations of large mammals such as elephants, gaurs, bantengs, and bears, alongside primates including gibbons and macaques, and predators such as leopards and tigers. Its remote location, combined with the difficulty of access, has helped maintain the relatively undisturbed character of the protected area, even as it remains largely outside the reach of conventional tourism routes. Although Phou Den Din borders Vietnam and shares ecological characteristics with neighboring transboundary forest complexes, it functions primarily as a national-scale conservation site under Lao administration. The combination of highland forest habitat, populations of globally significant mammal and bird species, and limited infrastructure pressures makes it an important but still relatively underdocumented component of Laos's protected-area network.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
