Puerto Arista

Puerto Arista is a fishing village and beach destination on the northern coast of Chiapas, Mexico, set along the Gulf of Tehuantepec where the Sierra Madre de Chiapas meets the Pacific Ocean. Originally founded as a commercial port in the early nineteenth century, the settlement lost its shipping role after the Panamerican Railway opened in the early 1900s and gradually became a regional beach getaway for residents of the state capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez. The locality is best known today as the home of one of Chiapas's four official sea turtle sanctuaries, the Santuario Playas de Puerto Arista, a protected natural area administered by Mexico's National Commission of Natural Protected Areas. The sanctuary combines broad Pacific beaches with mangrove habitats and serves as a key nesting ground for olive ridley, leatherback, green, and hawksbill turtles. Although infrastructure remains simple and development has been uneven across the decades, Puerto Arista continues to function as Chiapas's most popular shoreline destination, attracting visitors who come for its long gray volcanic sand beaches, dramatic mountain backdrop, fishing heritage, and the chance to participate in sea turtle conservation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
