Ras ir-Raħeb

Ras ir-Raħeb is a scenic limestone promontory on the north-western coast of Malta, close to the hamlet of Baħrija and within the council area of Rabat. The headland rises to about 45 metres above sea level and marks the outer edge of the Rabat, Dingli, and Mdina plateau, sitting just off Fomm ir-Riħ Bay and offering wide views westward along the island's cliff coast and across to Gozo. The site is best known for the layered archaeological landscape that crowns the headland, where the remains of a prehistoric megalithic temple and later Punic and Roman structures share the same ground. Scholars continue to debate whether the complex was a domestic villa, a small shrine, or a major temple linked to Heracles, and the headland's two Maltese names, Hermit's Headland and Churches' Headland, hint at a long-held sense of religious significance. Surrounding the promontory is one of Malta's most important coastal environments. The cliffs shelter endemic and sensitive flora and birdlife, while the sea below holds Posidonia seagrass meadows, sandbanks, and a population of noble pen clams. This combination of terrestrial archaeology and marine habitat has shaped the modern status of Ras ir-Raħeb as a Natura 2000 site, part of Malta's first marine protected area, and a well-known diving and walking destination.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
