Réserve naturelle intégrale de Betampona

The Réserve naturelle intégrale de Betampona is a small but ecologically significant protected area on the eastern coast of Madagascar, located in the Analanjirofo region roughly 45 kilometers northwest of the port city of Toamasina. Established by decree on 30 December 1927, it was the very first integral nature reserve created in Madagascar, and it remains one of the last relatively well-preserved fragments of lowland humid evergreen forest surviving along the country's eastern seaboard. The reserve covers a steep, dissected forested massif whose hills, ridges, and forested valleys shelter twelve permanent rivers and a dense network of streams. Within this humid tropical setting, Betampona protects an exceptional concentration of endemic Malagasy wildlife, including several critically important lemur species and a rich herpetofauna. Managed since 1996 by Madagascar National Parks with support from the Madagascar Fauna and Flora Group, it stands as a vital refuge for the biodiversity of Madagascar's vanishing eastern rainforests. Despite its protected status, Betampona faces ongoing pressure from slash-and-burn agriculture, selective logging for fuelwood, hunting, and the ecological isolation that comes with shrinking surrounding forests. Its conservation story is therefore as much about the challenges of maintaining a small forest fragment in a densely populated agricultural landscape as it is about the rare species it shelters.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
