Réserve naturelle nationale de la falaise du Cap-Romain

The Réserve naturelle nationale de la falaise du Cap-Romain is a small National Nature Reserve on the Normandy coast of northwestern France. Classified in 1984, it protects around 24 hectares of coastal cliff, rocky shore, and sandy beach along the Côte de Nacre in the Calvados department, between the communes of Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer and Bernières-sur-Mer. The reserve is primarily geological, set up to preserve an exceptional record of Jurassic marine life preserved in the face of an 8-metre-high coastal cliff. Far more than a typical scenic coastline, the site is a reference point for Jurassic palaeontology. Erosion of the cliff has revealed fossil sponge reefs of Bathonian age, around 167 million years old, alongside the shells and echinoids that lived among them. The reserve combines this deep-time geological interest with a layered human history spanning the Mesolithic to the early Middle Ages, including a Gallo-Roman villa and a Merovingian necropolis. Today, the reserve is managed by the Association Patrimoine Géologique de Normandie (APGN) and serves both as a protected natural heritage site and a destination for geological education. Its compact footprint, scientific importance, and coastal setting make it a distinctive example of France's network of small but highly specialized national nature reserves.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
