A tidal Cornish river flowing between Newquay and Crantock into the Celtic Sea

River Gannel

The River Gannel is a short tidal river on the north coast of Cornwall, England, that runs from the village of Indian Queens through the countryside north of Newquay before opening into a tidal estuary separating Newquay from the village of Crantock and emptying into the Celtic Sea. Some 13 kilometres long, it drains a catchment shaped in part by the Newlyn Downs and is centred on a narrow, historically busy channel that has supported settlement, industry, and trade for thousands of years. The lower Gannel is recognised for its ecological value as well as its cultural and industrial heritage. Since January 2016, the estuary up to the tidal limit has been designated as part of the Newquay and the Gannel Marine Conservation Zone, protecting unusual intertidal and subtidal habitats. The river has also been associated with local legend, including the famous Gannel Crake, an unexplained sound heard over the estuary that has long been woven into Cornish folk tradition. Although modest in size, the Gannel is a defining feature of the Newquay landscape, shaping the boundary between the town and Crantock and providing habitat for migratory birds, rare fish, and varied marine life. Sand dunes, cliffs, and shifting channels along its course give the area a distinctive and changing character subject to tides, weather, and long-term coastal evolution.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
