San Ignacio Lagoon

San Ignacio Lagoon is a coastal lagoon on the Pacific side of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico, lying within the Mulegé Municipality of Baja California Sur. It sits roughly 59 kilometers from the town of San Ignacio, reached from the region's main coastal highway. The lagoon is widely recognized as one of the most important winter sanctuaries of the eastern Pacific gray whale, where pregnant females gather to give birth and where mothers raise their calves before the long migration back to Arctic feeding grounds. Set deep inside the arid desert landscape of the peninsula, the lagoon stretches inland through shallow tidal waters and shifting sandbars. Its protected status, first under the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve and later under additional international designations, has helped it survive a turbulent whaling history and remain a largely undeveloped wildlife refuge. Today the area is closely linked to the small local community that depends on fishing and regulated whale watching for its livelihood. Beyond whales, San Ignacio Lagoon matters because it is one of only a handful of undeveloped breeding and nursery sites for the species worldwide, and because it provides refuge for endangered pronghorn and several species of sea turtles across its broader protected setting.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
