San Rafael National Park

San Rafael National Park is a proposed protected area in southeastern Paraguay, spanning the Itapúa and Caazapá departments in the upper Tebicuary River basin within the San Rafael Hills. Covering approximately 69,304 hectares, the area encompasses the largest remaining tract of Atlantic Forest in Paraguay, along with significant stretches of natural grasslands and wetlands in the northern mesopotamian grasslands region. Although declared as an Area Reserved for a National Park in 1992, the park has yet to be formally established due to ongoing legal disputes over private land ownership and uncertainty regarding its final designation. The park occupies a transitional ecological zone between the tall humid forests of the Paraná River basin and the lower drier forests of the Paraguay River basin. It forms part of the proposed Trinational Biodiversity Corridor, designed to connect conservation areas across Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina in the Upper Paraná ecoregion.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
