Tiga Island National Park

Tiga Island National Park is a marine protected area off the west coast of Sabah, Malaysia, established in 1978 and administered by Sabah Parks. The park lies in the South China Sea north of Kuala Penyu and opposite the swampy Klias Peninsula, covering around 158 square kilometres of mostly ocean around three small islands. The islands that give the park its name were formed in 1897 by the eruption of mud volcanoes, an unusual geological origin that still shapes the landscape today. Volcanic activity persists as bubbling mud, methane venting, and occasional outpourings, while one of the smaller islands has been largely worn down to a sandbar and another reduced to a rocky outcrop. The combination of mud-volcano geology, white sand beaches, and rich surrounding waters makes the park a distinctive coastal and marine destination within Borneo's protected-area network.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
