Wingham Brush Nature Reserve

Wingham Brush Nature Reserve is a small but ecologically significant protected area in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, in eastern Australia. Covering only about eight hectares, the reserve preserves a rare surviving patch of subtropical lowland rainforest along the floodplain of the Manning River, just inland from the coastal town of Wingham. The reserve is dominated by towering Moreton Bay figs and around seventy-six recorded tree species, supported by rich alluvial soils washed down from the Barrington Tops and surrounding plateaux. Its presence today is the result of decades of volunteer-led regeneration that transformed a heavily weed-infested forest back into a functioning rainforest, an effort now known internationally as the “Wingham Brush method.” Wingham Brush is best known as a major roosting site for the grey-headed flying fox, and for its dense bird and reptile life in a setting that contrasts sharply with the cleared agricultural land surrounding it. To the local Biripi people, whose word for the place describes where bats come to drink, the rainforest has long held deep cultural and spiritual significance as a source of food, materials, and ceremony.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
