Xinjiang Tarim Populus Diversifolia National Nature Reserve

The Xinjiang Tarim Populus Diversifolia National Nature Reserve is a national-level protected area in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of northwestern China, centered on the middle reaches of the Tarim River where it borders the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert. Spanning several thousand square kilometers across Yuli County and Luntai County in the Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, it is regarded as the largest Populus euphratica, or diversifolia, forest reserve in China. The reserve exists primarily to conserve a unique desert riparian ecosystem built around two poplar species, Populus euphratica and Populus pruinosa, along with associated tamarisk shrubs and wetland vegetation. The combination of a hyperarid climate, shifting river channels, seasonal lakes, and saline soils shapes a landscape that is botanically unusual within China and ecologically vital for the Tarim Basin. Beyond its forests, the reserve protects desert wetlands, a segment of the Tarim River that flows eastward through the protected area for more than 160 kilometers, and habitat for rare wildlife ranging from golden eagles and black storks to the wild Bactrian camel and the Tarim red deer. It stands as one of the most important forest-conservation areas in the arid interior of Eurasia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
