Xinjiang Yili Xiaoye Baila National Nature Reserve

The Xinjiang Yili Xiaoye Baila National Nature Reserve is a national-level protected area in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of northwestern China, focused on the conservation of the narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus sogdiana, known in Chinese as xiaoye baila), a rare tree species regarded as a Tertiary relict. The reserve sits in Yining County within the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, occupying a wedge-shaped, westward-opening valley in the central Tianshan Mountains at the confluence of the Kashi River and the Ili River. Geographically, the reserve benefits from a sheltered microclimate that blocks cold air from the north and dry hot air from the south, producing relatively humid conditions unusual for inland Central Asia. Quaternary alluvial floodplains and terraces combined with loess-covered low hills form ideal habitat for the ash forest, which grows in distinct community types along the river. Beyond its flagship tree, the reserve supports a diverse regional flora and fauna typical of the Tianshan foothills and Ili Valley, including nationally protected wild plants and birds. Designated at the prefectural level in 1983 and elevated to national status in 2016, the reserve is now managed through a dedicated administration and a long-term conservation plan, reflecting its growing importance for biodiversity protection in Xinjiang.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
