Area de Proteccion de Flora y Fauna Yum Balam

Yum Balam is a Mexican federal protected natural area located on the northeastern edge of the Yucatan Peninsula, at the far northern tip of the state of Quintana Roo and extending across the municipalities of Lazaro Cardenas and Isla Mujeres. Established in 1994 under the federal system of Areas de Proteccion de Flora y Fauna, it protects a mosaic of tropical landscapes typical of this corner of the peninsula, including low and medium-stature semideciduous forests, extensive mangrove systems, freshwater wetlands, and coastal lagoons opening onto the Caribbean Sea. The protected area is best known for its convergence of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in a relatively compact northern Yucatan setting. The Laguna de Yalahau, an important inland lagoon system, is one of the defining features of the reserve, surrounded by mangroves and seasonal wetlands that support rich birdlife, including large flocks of flamingos. Its position near Holbox Island and the islands off the northern coast gives the area additional importance for migratory birds, sea turtles, and other coastal and marine species. From a conservation perspective, Yum Balam represents one of the most ecologically significant protected landscapes in northern Quintana Roo, safeguarding biodiversity, hydrological systems, and traditional plant resources such as the chicle tree that have long defined the regional forest economy. It combines ecological protection with the cultural and economic identity of the Yucatan's northern tropical forests.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
