Zagatala State Reserve

Zagatala State Reserve is a protected natural area in northern Azerbaijan, lying on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Range across the Zagatala and Balakan districts. Established in 1929, it ranks among the oldest state nature reserves in Azerbaijan and was created specifically to safeguard the plant and animal communities of the southern Caucasus. The reserve is dominated by ancient broadleaf forests of oak, hornbeam, beech, chestnut, walnut, and other deciduous species, with mountain meadows rising higher up the slopes. More than 900 plant species have been recorded here, representing a significant share of Azerbaijan's overall flora, while the reserve's forests shelter rare Caucasian fauna including lynx, brown bears, Roe deer, and several bird species listed in the Red Book of Azerbaijan. Beyond its biological importance, the reserve contains dramatic river valleys, deep gorges, mineral springs, caves, and waterfalls, including the notable Zagatala waterfall on the Katekh River. Three major rivers; Mazimchay, Balakenchay, and Katekhchay; originate in the surrounding Caucasus peaks and flow through the reserve into the Alazan valley.

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
