Zona Protectora Forestal los terrenos constitutivos de las cuencas de los ríos Valle de Bravo, Malacatepec, Tilostoc y Temascaltepec

Zona Protectora Forestal los terrenos constitutivos de las cuencas de los ríos Valle de Bravo, Malacatepec, Tilostoc y Temascaltepec is a forested protected area in central Mexico, located in the mountains of the State of Mexico. It spans a large portion of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, where the terrain forms the continental divide between the Lerma River basin to the north and the Balsas River basin to the south. The area is defined less by a single dramatic landmark and more by its role as a mountain watershed, protecting the upper catchments of the Cutzamala and Temascaltepec rivers that flow toward the Balsas system. The most significant ecological gradient runs from tropical dry deciduous forests in the lower elevations up through oak and pine-oak forests, into pine and fir stands at the highest altitudes. This vertical zonation supports a wide range of native species, from margays and jaguarundis in the forested slopes to raptors and endemic Mexican birds in the canopy, and the mountains also serve as winter habitat for monarch butterflies. Beyond biodiversity, the protected area matters because it safeguards the headwaters of the Cutzamala basin, one of the most important freshwater sources for Mexico City through the Cutzamala-Lerma water supply system. Its conservation role is therefore both ecological and hydrological, linking forest protection to urban water security for millions of people downstream.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
