Alkhanay National Park

Alkhanay National Park is a federally protected area in the Duldurginsky District of Zabaykalsky Krai, in southeastern Siberia, Russia. Established in 1999, the park covers a substantial area of mountain taiga and mid-elevation terrain where the boreal forests of Eurasia meet the great steppes of Dauria. This transitional position gives the park unusually rich biodiversity, with more than 600 plant species and over 120 vertebrate species documented across its forests, meadows, rocky slopes, and river valleys. What sets Alkhanay apart from most other Russian national parks is the presence of a major Buddhist sacred complex. Mount Alkhanay and its surrounding rock formations have served as a place of worship for the Buryat people since the early nineteenth century, with more than 20 cult sites including temples, stupas, stone steles, and natural arches woven into the landscape. The park balances ecological protection, scientific research, and regulated recreation and pilgrimage, making it an unusual synthesis of natural and spiritual heritage.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
