Azov, Syvash National Nature Park

Azov–Syvash National Nature Park is a protected coastal area in southern Ukraine spanning the waters and islands of the northwestern Sea of Azov, with a particular focus on the unique Syvash lagoon system and Byriuchyi Island. Established in 1993, the park covers approximately 52,600 hectares and encompasses both marine and wetland environments that form part of the Pontic–Caspian steppe ecoregion. The park is internationally significant as a major stopover point along the East Atlantic Flyway, where more than one million migratory birds pass through each year. The landscape consists of shallow lagoon bays, sandy spits, coastal islands, and remnant steppe habitats, creating a distinctive blend of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The Syvash sector in particular features extremely saline waters that can appear pink due to salt-tolerant microalgae, while the islands support more representative southern steppe vegetation. This combination of coastal wetlands, steppe remnants, and isolated islands makes the park a critical refuge for biodiversity in a region where such habitats have become increasingly rare.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
