Bhitarkanika National Park

Bhitarkanika National Park is a 145 square kilometre protected area in northeastern Kendrapara district of Odisha, eastern India. Designated on 16 September 1998, it represents the second-largest mangrove ecosystem in India and forms the core of a larger wilderness complex that includes the surrounding Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary spanning 672 square kilometres. The park is intersected by a network of tidal creeks and estuarine rivers including the Brahmani, Baitarani, Dhamra, and Pathsala, all flowing into the Bay of Bengal. Its ecological significance was formally recognized when it became a Ramsar site on 19 August 2002, making it the second wetland of international importance in Odisha after Chilika Lake. The park's mangrove forests create a dynamic intertidal environment where specialized salt-tolerant plants thrive in constantly shifting tidal conditions, supporting an extraordinary concentration of wildlife.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
