Guangxi Hepu Dugong National Nature Reserve

The Guangxi Hepu Dugong National Nature Reserve is a marine protected area located along the southeastern coast of Hepu County in Beihai, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. It lies in the northeastern part of the Gulf of Tonkin, also known as the Beibu Gulf, and protects a stretch of shallow coastal waters, intertidal flats, tidal channels, sand ridges, and seabed plains that together form one of the country's most important habitats for the dugong, a herbivorous marine mammal. The reserve was originally established at the autonomous region level in 1986 and was elevated to national status in 1992. It remains the only national-level nature reserve in China whose primary mandate is the conservation of the dugong. Beyond the dugong itself, the reserve also addresses threats to other rare marine species found in the same waters, including the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, the Bryde's whale, the blue whale, the finless porpoise, the whale shark, and sea turtles. The reserve's significance lies in its combination of extensive seagrass meadows, which serve as the principal feeding ground for dugongs, and a coastal environment shaped by tropical marine monsoon climate. It represents a key site in China's marine biodiversity protection framework and a focal point of national efforts to safeguard one of the world's rarest marine mammals.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
