Isla San Pedro Martir

Isla San Pedro Martir is a small, uninhabited island in the central Gulf of California, located roughly midway between the coast of Baja California and the Sonoran mainland of Mexico. It is the most isolated island in the gulf, sitting more than 50 km from either the peninsula or the Sonora coast. The island's arid, rocky terrain and surrounding cold, productive waters support one of the most important seabird breeding colonies in the region, as well as rich marine biodiversity. In the mid-2000s, the island was included among a broader set of protected islands and marine zones of the Gulf of California that were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognizing both its natural value and its role within a larger network of Gulf islands. The island remains uninhabited, with the nearest mainland settlement being Bahia de Kino on the Sonoran coast, roughly 60 km away. Because of the combined value of its bird colonies, its isolation, and the exceptional marine productivity that surrounds it, Isla San Pedro Martir is widely regarded as one of the most ecologically significant small islands in the Gulf of California.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
