Kitulo National Park

Kitulo National Park is a remarkable high-altitude protected area in the southern highlands of Tanzania, established in 2005 as the first national park in tropical Africa created primarily to safeguard its exceptional flora. The park occupies the Kitulo Plateau at an elevation of approximately 2,600 metres between the Kipengere and Poroto mountain ranges, spanning roughly 413 square kilometres across Mbeya and Njombe Regions. This montane grassland and forest ecosystem represents one of the most important botanical sites on the African continent, home to more than 350 plant species including numerous ground orchids, geophytes, and Afroalpine flora that bloom spectacularly during the November to April wet season. The plateau is reverently known locally as Bustani ya Mungu, or "The Garden of God," while botanists have long referred to it as the "Serengeti of Flowers" for its staggering floral diversity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
