Hungary's bird-rich floodplain preserve on the Great Hungarian Plain

Körös-Maros National Park

Körös-Maros National Park is one of Hungary's ten national parks, established in 1997 to protect the exceptional bird populations and wetland ecosystems of the Southern Great Plain. Located in Békés county in southeastern Hungary, the park covers approximately 501 square kilometers of floodplain, marshland, and steppe pasture landscapes. The park encompasses the Körös River system and Maros River floodplain, creating a complex of wetlands, oxbow lakes, fishponds, and puszta (grassland steppe) that serves as one of Central Europe's most important bird migration corridors. The region features several distinct areas including the Dévaványai-Ecsegi puszták with its famous bustard reserve, the Biharugrai fishpond complex, and the Kardoskúti Fehér-tó lake system. The park was created specifically for avian conservation and remains a critical refuge for ground-nesting steppe birds, migratory waterfowl, and rare species that have largely disappeared from Hungary's cultivated lowlands.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
