Paanajärvi National Park

Paanajärvi National Park is a protected wilderness area in the Loukhsky District of the Republic of Karelia, in northwestern Russia. Established in 1992, the park spans approximately 1,044 square kilometers of pristine boreal forest, lakes, and rivers along the Finnish-Russian border. The park sits within the Maanselkä hills, a region of rolling forested terrain that forms part of the broader Scandinavian and Russian Taiga ecoregion. It represents one of the most significant remaining tracts of old-growth taiga forest in Europe, protecting a landscape that has remained relatively undisturbed by industrial development. The park is notable for containing Nuorunen, the highest point in all of Karelia, and it forms a contiguous protected corridor with Oulanka National Park on the Finnish side of the border.
