National Park of Lakes Korónia, Vólvi and Macedonian Tempi

The National Park of Lakes Korónia, Vólvi and Macedonian Tempi is a composite Greek protected area that brings together two large freshwater lake basins and a river gorge into a single conservation landscape. Created in 2004 east of the Thessaloniki metropolitan area and north of the Chalkidiki peninsula, the park covers roughly 159 square kilometers of wetland, riparian forest, agricultural buffer, and gorge terrain in the heart of Macedonia. Its identity is shaped less by dramatic scenery than by ecological function. The park safeguards some of the most significant wetland habitat in northern Greece, providing a network of sites that support migratory waterbirds, wintering populations, and Mediterranean wetland flora. Lake Vólvi is the second largest natural lake in Greece, while Lake Korónia represents one of the more troubled, yet ecologically important, wetland sites in the country. The Macedonian Tempi, a gorge carved by the Richios River that drains Lake Vólvi toward the Strymonian Gulf, completes the protected mosaic. Together, these three sub-areas form a crucial corridor for biodiversity between the Axios delta region to the west and the coastal wetlands of eastern Macedonia, while also serving as a Ramsar site, a Natura 2000 area, and an Important Bird Area.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
