Psiloritis Natural Park

Psiloritis Natural Park is a UNESCO Global Geopark in the central part of Crete, in southern Greece. It spreads across the Psiloritis mountain range and its northern foothills, reaching down to the Cretan Sea, and covers a large proportion of the island's interior. Since 2001 it has been a member of the European Geoparks Network and is recognized within UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network. The park is defined by the dramatic karstic landscape of Mount Ida, the highest massif in Crete when measured from base to peak. Its territory includes deep caves, sinkholes, and high mountain steppes, alongside zones of pastoral and agricultural land that reflect long-standing human interaction with the terrain. The Idaean Cave, the legendary birthplace of Zeus in Greek mythology, lies within the park. Psiloritis Natural Park is distinguished by the integration of geological heritage, cultural traditions, and contemporary sustainable development. It is governed by local authorities through AKOMM Psiloritis S.A., with the Natural History Museum of the University of Crete acting as scientific advisor, and it serves both as a protected landscape and as an outdoor classroom for geology and earth science students from across Europe and beyond.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
