Punta Tombo

Punta Tombo is a narrow Atlantic peninsula on the coast of Chubut Province in Patagonia, Argentina, located roughly 100 to 110 kilometers south of Trelew and not far from the town of Camarones. The peninsula itself is only about three kilometers long and a few hundred meters wide, but its compact sands, gravels, and clay make it an ideal nesting ground for seabirds, especially the Magellanic penguin. The site has been protected since the early 1970s and is today one of the most important tourist destinations in Chubut. It functions as both a faunal reserve and a major wildlife viewing area, anchored by a breeding colony that, in strong seasons, brings together well over a million Magellanic penguins. Beyond penguins, Punta Tombo also shelters Patagonian steppe wildlife such as guanacos, foxes, and small mammals, and its surrounding waters support seabirds, sea lions, and an offshore marine protected area created to reduce threats from oil exploration and unregulated fishing.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
