Qumran National Park

Qumran National Park preserves the ruins of an ancient Jewish settlement on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea in the West Bank. The site is internationally significant as the closest settlement to the famous Qumran Caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were hidden nearly two thousand years ago. The archaeological remains include a main building with a defensive tower, complex water systems with stepped cisterns, ritual baths, a dining hall, and a suspected scriptorium. Scholars believe the settlement was inhabited during the late Second Temple period, most commonly identified with the Essenes, a Jewish sect that withdrew from mainstream society. The site was destroyed during the First Jewish-Roman War in 68 CE and later reoccupied during the Bar Kokhba revolt. Today the national park offers visitors the opportunity to explore these ancient ruins while learning about one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
