Salamajärvi National Park

Salamajärvi National Park is a protected wilderness area located in the border region between Central Ostrobothnia and Central Finland, spanning the municipalities of Perho, Kivijärvi, and Kinnula. Established in 1982, the park covers approximately 62 to 65 square kilometres of largely uninhabited terrain in the rugged watershed region of Suomenselkä, a geological highland that forms part of the continental divide in Finland. The park is part of a broader network of protected areas that also includes the adjacent Salamanperä Nature Reserve to its southern boundary. The park is especially distinguished by its diverse mire ecosystems, which are among the most extensive and well-preserved in Finland. These wetlands, characterized by bogs, fens, and peatland complexes, sit within a landscape of old-growth forests, small forest lakes, and distinctive rocky terrain. The Suomenselkä watershed region creates a network of streams and water bodies that feed into larger river systems, adding ecological complexity to the protected area. Visitors can explore about 60 kilometres of marked trails, with some routes designed to be accessible while others present more challenging terrain due to the rocky and rugged nature of the landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
