Sitia Nature Park

Sitia Nature Park is a UNESCO Global Geopark covering much of the eastern end of the island of Crete in southern Greece. Its boundaries are nearly the same as those of the Municipality of Sitia, except that the naval base at the tip of Cape Sideros and the surrounding small islands are excluded. This gives the park an unusually broad territorial scope for a geopark, spanning mountain interiors, deep gorges, hill ranges, and a long coastline along the Libyan Sea. At its core, the park is a mountainous landscape defined by the Sitia Mountains, the Coastal Hill Range of East Crete, and a series of dramatic gorges such as the Zakros Canyon, often called the Valley of the Dead. Beyond geology, the park hosts extensive cave systems, traditional villages, and the Moni Toplou monastery, offering a layered blend of natural and cultural heritage. What distinguishes Sitia Nature Park from many other protected areas in Greece is its UNESCO Geopark status: the area is recognized internationally for its geological heritage while still functioning as a living landscape of farms, monasteries, and small coastal communities. Sponsored hiking and spelunking programs connect visitors directly with these landscapes.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
