Beas Conservation Reserve

The Beas Conservation Reserve is a protected natural area in northwestern India that safeguards an 185 km stretch of the Beas River as it descends from the Himalayan foothills toward the Harike Headworks. Declared a conservation reserve by the government of Punjab in 2017, the area centres on the braided river channels, sand bars, and river islands that form a complex and dynamic freshwater environment. The reserve is internationally recognised for its wetlands, having been designated a Ramsar site in September 2019. Beyond its hydrological importance, the Beas Conservation Reserve has become a focal point for freshwater biodiversity conservation in India, supporting more than 500 bird species and over 90 fish species, including several threatened and recovering populations. Its most distinctive identity comes from the unexpected presence of the endangered Indus river dolphin, an animal once thought lost from Indian waters, alongside reintroduced gharials and other rare freshwater fauna. This combination of riverine habitat protection, species recovery, and formal wetland recognition makes the reserve an unusually significant conservation landscape for a relatively recent protected designation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
