Chagres National Park

Chagres National Park is a protected area of international significance located in the eastern sector of the Panama Canal, spanning the Panamá Province and Colón Province in central Panama. Established in 1985 and officially created in 1986, the park encompasses 129,000 hectares of tropical rain forest within the Chagres Highlands, a range of low mountains that form part of the Continental Divide of the Americas. The park serves a critical ecological and economic function as the primary watershed supplying water to Gatun Lake, the main reservoir that enables the Panama Canal to operate. Beyond its infrastructural importance, the park protects some of the most biodiverse lowland and montane tropical forests in Central America, supporting numerous endemic species and serving as a crucial corridor for wildlife movement between the Caribbean and Pacific slopes of the isthmus.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
