Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary

Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in the Indian state of Assam, situated mainly within Kokrajhar district with adjacent portions extending into Dhubri district. It lies in the lower foothills of the Brahmaputra River basin, where mixed deciduous forests climb a north-south running hill range flanked by two freshwater lakes known as Dheer Beel and Diplai Beel. The sanctuary is most famous for being one of only two protected habitats in India that harbor the golden langur, a primate found almost entirely within this region. Beyond langurs, the reserve supports a rich assemblage of mammals, reptiles, butterflies, and birds, including several globally threatened species. Established as a reserve forest in 1966 and later upgraded to sanctuary status in 1994, Chakrashila is a relatively compact protected area that plays an outsized role in primate conservation and forest protection in western Assam. Its proximity to Kokrajhar town also makes it one of the more accessible wildlife destinations in the region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
