Coocumbac Island Nature Reserve

Coocumbac Island Nature Reserve is a small protected island on the Manning River, near Taree on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Australia. Although it covers only a few hectares, the reserve preserves a rare fragment of subtropical lowland rainforest, an ecological community that has been almost entirely cleared elsewhere in the region for housing and agriculture. The island's vegetation is dominated by a distinctive large fig and giant stinger tree association, with multiple strangler fig species, including Moreton Bay figs, growing alongside stinging trees and other rainforest trees. A fringe of mangroves encircles the island, while the rainforest itself holds cultural significance for local Aboriginal custodians, for whom Coocumbac is a traditional meeting place. Although modest in size, the reserve is ecologically important because it protects rainforest species, flying fox camps, and rainforest-dependent birds in a setting otherwise dominated by cleared coastal land. It is managed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and is reached primarily by watercraft, with a staircase giving pedestrian access to the trail network.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
