Jabal Al Rihane Biosphere Reserve

Jabal Al Rihane Biosphere Reserve is a protected Mediterranean landscape in Southern Lebanon, formally designated in 2007 and recognized as part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The reserve runs along a ridge of the southern Mount Lebanon chain, overlooking the Beqaa Valley to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, with the Litani River defining much of its southern boundary. Its roughly 18,430 hectares protect evergreen sclerophyllous forests and shrublands, including oaks that are several centuries old, making it an important refuge of the Levant's natural Mediterranean character. Together with the Shouf Biosphere Reserve and the Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve further north, Jabal Al Rihane forms a key section of an ecological corridor running along Lebanon's mountainous spine. The reserve is noted for its mix of native trees such as kermes oak and gall oak alongside carob and stone pine, as well as an unusually rich understorey of orchids, aromatic shrubs, and endemic plants. Its combination of forest ecosystems, mountain terrain, and Mediterranean mountain climate gives it a strong identity as one of southern Lebanon's most significant protected natural areas.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
